ANCOR organized a regular meeting of HR club for personnel managers from oil and gas companies

26.08.2007

The topic of the meeting's discussion was «Motivation of staff in oil and gas companies». The meeting was attended by representatives of the following companies: BP, Chevron, Emerson, Fluor, Shell, TNK-BP, Washington Group Int, Weatherford, WoodGroup and BK Eurasia, and Tatneft.

Yulia Denisova-Akchakodzha, the head of salaries and benefits department at BP, was the first to speak. She had prepared a presentation on the principle instruments used to motivate specialists that work in the oil and gas companies.

Yulia familiarized everyone with the modern statistical data and presented her analysis of the latest tendencies on the job market. Her presentation sparked a lot of interest among the participants and gave a start to the active discussion of this topic.

The first topic of discussion was graduate recruitment. Today the employers are facing the issue of hiring promising young specialists and the companies are engaged in a real «war for talents». But even the most promising students and graduates rarely reach satisfactory level of professional knowledge and expertise. In connection with this, the companies are forced to develop graduate recruitment programs. Svetlana Romanova, HR specialist from BP, shared her opinion and told her colleagues about Challenger program, which seeks to expose, attract and develop young specialists with high potential. Today similar programs exist in many international oil and gas corporations. Andrei Chepurnov, director for resource planning and personnel selection of TNK-BP, told participants about reasons for such close attention paid to young specialists and about practice of graduate recruitment in this Russian-British oil major.

The participants shared their opinions and exchange experience in solving problems connected with hiring and retaining young specialists. First of all, young people expect not only a high level of compensation, but also a high rate of career growth within the company. In addition to this, there is a notion on the market that a higher salary and a more interesting position are more easily attainable when transferring to a new company rather than working up the ranks of your own employer. This is why the specialists prefer to often change their jobs, moving from one company to another.

In the second part of the discussion the experts addressed the issue of motivating line specialists and discussed tendencies of horizontal career growth and personnel motivation by way of relocation. This topic sparked everyone's interest as everybody wanted to know what exactly should be included in people's relocation packages. One of several interesting methods of solving this problem was suggested by Oleg Sidomonidze, personnel director of the Shell group of companies. He cited examples of various companies in the oil and gas sector.

Oleg is a permanent member and the authoritative speaker of all of the roundtable discussions organized by ANCOR Energy Services. He shared with participants his vision of the oil and gas sector's most relevant problems. In particular, he spoke about reasons for fast salary growth in the sector.

On the whole the meeting turned out to be very informal — every participant had a chance to express their opinion freely and openly, to share experience and gain new knowledge.

We would like to thank all of the participants of this roundtable discussion for their active input. Here is a little photo report of this event.
